The University of Minnesota announced that Gary Wilson is retiring as the Gophers women’s cross country coach at the end of this 2012-13 season.
He will be replaced by Sarah Hesser, who is a a former Gophers runner and a current volunteer assistant on Wilson’s staff.
The Gophers have seen Wilson built his team into a national power during his 28 years as head coach. Minnesota had a streak of five consecutive top-12 NCAA finishes from 2005-09 and has qualified for the national meet each of the past seven years.
Wilson was previously the head coach of the women’s track team for 21 years; he has been an assistant on that staff since 2007.
As for the new girl, Hesser was a two-time cross country captain, senior track captain, and three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
