Gophers Badgers Hockey Recap

The Minnesota Golden Gophers hosted the Wisconsin Badgers for a two-game set this weekend. They finished with a tie on Friday, 2-2 and a victory on Saturday, 3-1.

Friday's games was close as Gophers Zach Budish scored early in the first period and Wisconsin tied it less than 30 seconds later. Same story in the second period where Erik Haula scored to help the Gophers gain the lead, 2-1, but shortly after Wisconsin tied it once again. The game ended 2-2.

On Saturday, Wisconsin scoted 16 minutes into the first period, but Minnesota reacted with three unanswered goals to win the game. Yes, Gophers! That is what we like to see!

Minnesota Michigan Football Recap

Gopher fans......

On November 3rd, we saw Devin Gardner replaced Denard Robinson in a surprise quarterback switch by Michigan right before kickoff. He threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Wolverines past Minnesota 35-13 on Saturday.

Gardner woke up the Wolverines after they went two straight games without a touchdown, guiding scoring drives of 91, 90, 86 and 79 yards to kill any hopes the Gophers had of an upset with Michigan's senior star on the sideline.

WHAT? Wellll it seemed to work for them!

Season opens with home exhibition vs. Lethbridge

This exhibition game won’t count, but Gophers fans will get their first look at this year’s men’s hockey squad Saturday night.
Minnesota will host Lethbridge, a Canadian university, at Mariucci Arena in an exhibition game.
Minnesota is one of three exhibition stops for Lethbridge, which will also play at Minnesota State-Mankato and Nebraska-Omaha.
While the game and its statistics don’t count, the lineups do. If a player suits up for the exhibition game, he uses a year of eligibility, meaning head coach Don Lucia must determine if he wants to redshirt any one his incoming freshman before Saturday.
The game will offer an opportunity for many players lower on the roster to gain some game experience, showcase their talents and possibly rise up the line chart.
Saturday is one of two exhibition games the Gophers will play this season. They will play the U.S. under-18 team later this month.
Don't have your tickets to Saturday's game? Check these out!
Minnesota opens its official regular season Oct. 12-13 at home against Michigan State.

Minnesota Gophers Vs. Iowa Hawkeyes Football

Minnesota (4-1) was off to its best start since 2008.....

But we just couldn't get anything going on offense Saturday. Minnesota Golden Gophers Football played against the Iowa Hawkeyes for Iowa's homecoming.

Max Shortell threw three interceptions and the Gophers managed only 75 yards in the first half. The Hawkeyes scored three touchdowns during a six-minute span of the second quarter to jump out to a 24-0 halftime lead.

Then the Gophers went three-and-out, and Iowa's normally conventional offense pulled a surprise with a flea-flicker on the first play of the drive. Weisman pitched the ball back to James Vandenberg, and the senior quarterback found a wide-open Jordan Cotton for a 47-yard score.

Minnesota won the previous two meetings with Iowa, rallying from behind in both games to win the rivalry trophy. The Gophers couldn't muster a comeback this time.

Wilson retiring as Gophers cross-country coach; replacement named as Sarah Hesser

The University of Minnesota announced that Gary Wilson is retiring as the Gophers women’s cross country coach at the end of this 2012-13 season.
He will be replaced by Sarah Hesser, who is a a former Gophers runner and a current volunteer assistant on Wilson’s staff.
The Gophers have seen Wilson built his team into a national power during his 28 years as head coach. Minnesota had a streak of five consecutive top-12 NCAA finishes from 2005-09 and has qualified for the national meet each of the past seven years.
Wilson was previously the head coach of the women’s track team for 21 years; he has been an assistant on that staff since 2007.
As for the new girl, Hesser was a two-time cross country captain, senior track captain, and three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Good luck to both coaches!

Gopher Football 4-0

What do you know.... Gopher football is fun when they win!

On Saturday night the Gophers beat Syracuse 17-10. Gophers looked strong in front of home crowd. And you don't want to miss MarQueis Gray and the entire Gopher team rock TCF Bank Stadium

It truly is a great time to be a gopher fan.

Minnesota Golden Gopher New Basketball Uniforms

The Minnesota Golden Gophers saw their football team debut new uniforms for the 2012 season, and it looks like the men's basketball team will also be getting new uniforms.

Marcus Fuller of The Pioneer Press had a post talking about the new uniforms, though we weren't supposed to see them for awhile yet. But, as is often the case these days, a player happened to send out a tweet with an early picture.
This wweet, from sophomore Joe Coleman, has been deleted (as is also often the case these days) since then, but like all things on the Internet, full deletion is never likely. That is a pro AND a con of the internet.
This U of M basketball player then followed it up with a tweet that read "Dang guess I can't do that." Haha Joe, you silly boy.

Gopher1_medium

The new jerseys from Nike are using a mesh design that the company refers to as their "Aerographics design," which allows an almost-subtle image on the jerseys. In this case, it's the likeness of Williams Arena, the "M" and the year the University was established, "1851." Lookin' GOOD!

Do you think the Gophers have the budget for this change?

Leave me a comment on your opinion!

Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Season 2012

Gophers 44, New Hampshire 7

Surprised, Gopher fans? I know I am! After a horrible football season last year, it was great to see a win on the board.

MarQueis Gray, an easy gopher favorite, threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more by halftime, and Minnesota finally was able to enjoy an easy victory over an FCS-level opponent by beating New Hampshire 44-7 TODAY, which, coincidently, was the most points in a game by the Gophers in five years.

Any ideas why the change this year? Leave me a comment on my Minnesota Gopher Blog with your thoughts.

Great jobs, boys! Let's see you keep this action up!

School is starting for Gophers!

Gopher freshman moved in yesterday for welcome week, and everyone else will soon be piling in. School for your Minnesota Gophers will start the Tuesday after Labor Day. The staff at the Golden Gophers Blog wishes all Gopher students, and all other students, teachers, and parents, GOOD LUCK with your school year! Don't forget to study, go to football games, and meet a ton of new people. You only get an education ONCE (trust me), so you should appreciate it!

Football Game Day for Gophers!

Sin City baby! With the Gophers probably landing about an hour ago, let's see how they will play tonight! With Jerry Kill as  coach, nobody knows what will happen.

What do you, the fans, think? Can Minnesota's defense stop the run? We already know that UNLV likely will rely on its running game (which is lookin' pretty tight) as it tries to find the permanent answer at quarterback. The Gophers were 91st in the nation last year in run defense (um, can anyone say embarrassing?), which yielded nearly 187 yards per game.

The Gophers will probably load the box and force the Rebels to throw deep, something they struggled with last year as the finished 118th in passing with 110 yards per game. But hey, it's a  brand new season!

Aaaand here we go, readers. College football season has began.

Gophers in the Olympics

Sorry for being so obsessed with the Olympics, but I am. There were 14 Minnesota athletes competing for Team USA this year in the 2012 London Olympics.

Two crowd favorites were Lindsay Berg (who we've talked about previously on our blog) and Kelci Bryant. Both Gopher Alum, these girls made us proud!

Berg helped lead Team USA into the Gold Medal match, but after a long match, USA took silver.

Bryant also won silver medal with her partner, Abby Johnston, in synchronized diving. This earned US their first medal EVER in Synchronized diving.

Congrats, girls! You make USA so proud!

Check out Gopher Alum Lindsey Berg

Gopher alum, Lindsey Berg, has led her Olympic volleyball team to the gold medal match! They are unbeaten, and have advanced to the Olympic final with a straight-set victory over South Korea today! The team will play for the title on the 11th, Saturday, against the winner of a later semifinal between Brazil and Japan.

Listen to this! The U.S. got a boost for their match with the return of captain Lindsey Berg, who was unable to play during the team's quarterfinal victory over the Dominican Republic due to an injury to her lower left leg.

After the match, U.S. coach Hugh McCutcheon made a straight up point of giving Berg a great big hug!

Hugh McCutcheon, who coached the American men to a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, will be the future coach of the University of Minnesota woman's volleyball team.

Go Gophers!

Golden Gopher Football!

Hey remember when...... Tubby Smith offered Jimmy Williams an assistant coaching position shortly after Smith became head coach at Minnesota? Williams then quit as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University in 2007 because he truly believed that Tubby Smith had hiring authority. Oops, this obviously fell through after Minnesota's athletics director, Joel Maturi, learned that Williams was cited for multiple major NCAA rules violations when he worked as a Golden Gophers assistant coach from 1971 to 1986.

Well, yesterday, on Wednesday, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned a $1 million award against the University of Minnesota and men's basketball coach Tubby Smith. The court ruled that even though they did treat Williams unfairly, the University of Minnesota shouldn't be held financially responsible for backing out of a job offer that Smith lacked the authority to make.

I mean, one million dollars is kinda a lot of money.

So, watch it, Tubby. You got out of this one easily. Be careful, we don't need you making a mess of things this season.

Tubby Smith's Contract Extended!

Minnesota Gopher basketball Coach, Tubby Smith's contract has been extended through the 2016-17 season! On Tuesday, Smith said his contract extension will keep his pay the same: $1.75 million a year. His new contract also added three years to the two remaining on his previous contract, but he didn't get a pay raise, like he wanted.

What does this mean for the Gopher team?

Smith thinks it's a good thing.  "I can genuinely say, 'Look fellas, I'm here.' For kids we sign this year or next year, I'll be here. Nobody knows whether you'll be here for certain or not because a lot of things can happen. But you expect to be here because you have a contract extension."

Now let's see some wins on the board!

Gopher Alum Competes in 2012 Olympics!

Who's getting excited for the Summer Olympics?! I can not wait to watch Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte (obvs), Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, and Rafael Nadal! Lindsey Berg is one of the gopher alum who will hit the Volleyball court July 26th! Lindsey was a four year setter starter for the gophers from 1998-2001 AND she still ranks 2nd all-time in Big Ten history for both her services aces and assists. What an athlete! Lindsey is also team USA captain and London will be her 3rd Olympics!

Good luck winning USA the gold!

Approved Beer Sales During Home Games at TCF Stadium!

So. Beer will FINALLY be sold on football Saturdays at the golden gophers home stadium! The University of Minnesota Regents voted and it was approved 10-1.

What does this mean for the University?

First off, more fun! Everyone likes to sip a beer while watching sporting events. Don't believe it? Check out this article on a study from our very own researchers at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between sports and alcohol consumption!

Also, a HUGE profit gain! It is estimated that selling beer during football Saturday will bring in $1.5 million yearly in extra revenue to the university! Woo!

However, Gopher security will have keep an even closer watch on the activity of the students. Already pregamed-up college students will now be able to get their hands on even MORE brew, which might make lewd behavior and alcohol poisoning a bigger threat.  But, Gopher regents were smart and are locating the venders on the west side of the stadium; farthest away from the student section :) AND this article shows that thanks to more security in places that sell beer, there hasn't been a significant increase in incidents!

Gophers in the TCF Stadium will be the first Big Ten school to sell alcohol outside of it's suites. Sooo take that Badgers!

I, personally, can't wait to see how crazy our gophers will get during Homecoming against Iowa! Mark your calenders:  September 28, 2013.

Hunter Friesen To Walk On at U of M

Hunter Friesen and Philip Nelson are hoping to transfer their football skills from Mankato West High School to the turf at TCF Stadium in 2013.

Friesen, a top receiving target for Nelson at West High School, accepted the oppotrunity to walk on at the U of M for the Gophers' 2013-14 season.

Friesen will take this season off, enroll at Minnesota in January and be on the practice field by spring 2013.

Nick Bjugstad: Pro or No?

The main question for the University of Minnesota's superstar Nick Bjugstad is whether or not he should return for another year of schooling and college hockey or if he should sign a contract that would make him a professional hockey player next season.

Bjugstad has come out stating that the decision is a very difficult one. He hinted that he would like to return to school in order to complete his degree in Business.

Nick Bjugstad is 6'6", 19 years old and a sophomore in college.

He was 60.

Taylor wrapped up his career averages 3.3 points and 3.7 rebounds. Taylor is often remembered for his role in the infamous Gophers/Ohio State brawl in 1972, which started when Taylor kneed Ohio State's Luke Witte in the groin.

Tubby Smith Contract Extension

Tubby Smith had his Gophers basketball contract extended for three years with a relatively small salary increase.

Smith's overall compensation with the new deal will depend primarily on incentive bonuses based on his and the team's performance.

Smith has two seasons remaining on his current contract. The new deal will run through the 2016-17 season.

Smith's current annual compensation is a bit over the $2 million mark. Salary has not been an issue during negotiations relative to buyout compensation should Smith be terminated before the end of the contract.
