Former Gopher Nick Leddy wins Stanley Cup

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and, more importantly, Gopher alum Nick Leddy became the ninth Gopher to win the Stanley Cup on Monday! His team, the Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins, 3-2, to win the championship series, and it was awesome!

He's only 22, and Leddy has already won a Stanley Cup Championship. He also won a state championship as a senior at Eden Prairie High School in 2009. That year, he was also named Minnesota's Mr. Hockey and was drafted by the Minnesota Wild with the 16th overall pick months later.

It's unfortunate that Leddy only played the 2009-10 season for the Gophers before leaving for the NHL.
Despite being drafted by the Wild, Leddy never suited up for the home team and was traded to the Blackhawks in February of 2010. He appeared in his first game on Oct. 7 of that year and would go on to play 46 games that season. In 2011-12, Leddy played in 82 games but has only skated in 48 games this season while also spending some time in the AHL.

Gophers at the 2013 NCAA

We know, we know, this blog usually comments on Gopher football, hockey, and basketball. But, we just had to blog about some Gopher TRACK recent news! We saw seniors Harun Abda and Travis Burkstrand and freshman Wally Ellenson as they claimed first-team All-America honors for the Minnesota Gophers this past Friday at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. Harun Abda picked up his 13th overall All-America honor, in his first collegiate event, with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 47.6 seconds.

We just had to congratulate the Gophers on this feat. Although we might not blog about track very often, we still appreciate all Gopher athletes! You are all amazing!

King is the fourth recruit that Richard Pinto has brought to the U of M since he started the job in April. There is one scholarship left for the Gopher basketball team, let's see who snags that!
