Even though I am down on the Gophers Hockey team, I have to give some proprs to Alex Kangas. Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey freshman goalie Alex Kangas has been coming up huge this season in the net for the Gophers. Although the Gophers are struggling to get back to a .500 record, Kangas currently ranks third among all Division I freshman goaltenders with a 2.28 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. Both those numbers are extremely solid for such a young goaltender.
Even more telling is Alex Kangas’ 1.80 goals against average and .933 save percentage since his seven starts after the holiday break. Kangas has never allowed more than three goals in any game this season, meaning the problem is the Gophers skaters more than the goaltending. Let’s hope this superb rookie sticks around for another season at the University of Minnesota and can keep the Gophers in the Fighting Sioux games this weekend.
